This conceptual piece in the Hopeless Romantic’ collection was inspired by John Keats epic poem, ‘Isabella, Or The Pot of Basil’, in which a grieving Isabella stores the head of her deceased lover inside a basil pot, which she lovingly tends. This gothic theme would inspire several Victorian artists to do their take on various parts of the poem - for me, the basil pot with the concealed head, inspired the very most.
In a ‘pot’ of fabricated sterling silver basil, the leaves hand formed and hammered, is clasped the brilliant gemstone of the delicately rendered Lorenzo’s head in glass-enamel, catching the light and reflecting it back as only cloisonné enamels can. (Cloisonné enamels are created by laying powdered glass painstakingly into cells of silver wire that have been bent to for an outline, and subsequently kiln fired in more than 10 firings for each piece - For more on how cloisonné Pieces are created, check out this link where I walk you through the process in an IGTV).
On either side, from the sterling silver basil leaves, hangs a ‘blood drop’ in red-purple Indian garnet, further symbolism of the youth’s dark fate.
This piece is a brooch/necklace conversion, two sturdy pins at the back as well as a capacious bail for wearing as a necklace with the provided medium-length chain. The brooch may tie back a scarf or as a personal FAVOURITE of mine - at the top button on a shirt where this wowing BattleAxe of a piece can make a big unusual statement.
You will be getting this very piece pictured. It’s a substantial jewel with quite a bit of weight to it (60g) so it comes on a strong chain as pictured, but may be easily switched to other chains. Conceptual vitreous enamel pieces like this grow more precious with age, and it was created to become an heirloom. Being art jewelry, the piece is signed and dated on the back.
